Strength Training for Runners
Lifting weights to run better? Are you crazy?
Many runners frown upon weight training because they fear it will make them too bulky and slow them down. Others believe it’s OK as long as it involves low weight and high repetitions. The truth is neither of these statements is correct. Whether or not strength training provides a benefit for runners is more about timing and proper exercise choice.
When running, you are contracting your muscles at a low to moderate force repeatedly for a long duration. Resistance training, especially strength and power training, involves just the opposite: high intensity and high force output for a short duration. On paper, it would seem that mixing strength training with running would provide no benefit and might even make you slower. However, numerous research studies have proven that incorporating a resistance training program into your running schedule can be highly beneficial.
What are some of the benefits?
- Improved running economy and efficiency
- Better performance
- Less muscle fatigue
- Decreased risk of injury
