Physiology of football
According to legendary Green Bay Packers Head Coach Vince Lombardi, “. . . football is only two things—blocking and tackling.” While at its basic level, this is mostly true, but there is so much more to it than that.
While somewhat similar to rugby, American football has evolved (thanks to Walter Camp, among others) into one of the most unique, interesting, and exciting sports there is. It involves powerful movements; linemen explode off the line and linebackers tackle with the same explosiveness. Football involves speed; from the wide receiver running his route to the defensive back covering him. It involves coordination and balance; running backs doing their best to avoid being tackled. It involves arm strength; offensive linemen blocking and quarterbacks throwing. Football requires endurance; all positions need to be as powerful, fast, and strong at the end of the game as they do at the beginning. In addition, it involves something quite unique . . . impact. Impact and those bone jarring collisions are one of the aspects that sets football apart from other sports.
Common football injuries
While football players use as much (if not more) protective equipment as other sports, injuries remain quite common. The speed and power of the players and the nature of the game make injuries inevitable. Though these injuries occur during both practices and games, injuries occur nearly six times more during games than practices.
The most commonly injured body part for football players is the knee, followed by the shoulder, hand and ankle joints. This does not include concussions.
Common injuries include the following:
- ACL Tear
- Shoulder Separation
- Ankle Sprain
- Concussion

Testimonials
My experience at OSPT was more than i could ask for. David and the rest of the team so helpful and seemed so educated, I always knew I was in good hands. I’ve never worked with someone as helpful and I knew his main goal was his number one priority. I would definitely suggest OSPT to anybody who asked my opinion!
